Here’s a place you can’t help feeling happy visiting. Founded in 1994 by brothers Bert and John Jacobs, Life is Good is centered around products featuring a simple drawing of a character, Jake, and his contagious smile. As the company took off nationally, the drawings have expanded to depictions on products of other charming characters, including a very cute dog. Under the umbrella of Kitty Hawk Kites, which is located next door, the store features T-shirts, coffee mugs, beach supplies and hats with wry sayings and irresistible cartoon drawings to fit numerous activities and topics, as long as they’re upbeat. The T-shirts are high quality and exceptionally soft. Don’t forget the dog or the baby --- there’s some irresistible items for little canines and tiny humans. A bonus: The store, located at Milepost 13 off the Bypass,is right across from Jockey’s Ridge State Park, the tallest natural sand dune system on the East Coast. If you get there at dusk, you’ll pretty much be guaranteed to see an eye-popping sunset right out the front door. But any time of the day will be a worthy trip to this fun shop. Also look for Life is Good products at Duck and Rodanthe locations.

Opened in 2002, shortly before the Outer Banks’ first annual Bike Week, the Nags Head Harley-Davidson sells just about everything a hog rider would want except the motorcycle. The store is decorated with big Harley banners and decorative signs that are for sale, and is filled with a great collection of Harley T-shirts for men, women and children. In addition to a selection of bike gear, there’s key rings, collectible stuffed toys, baby items, hats, sandals, jewelry, hoodies and sunglasses. And the shop owner hasn’t forgot the store’s resort location: There’s also Harley golf balls and hats and beach towels in stock.

No trip to Ocracoke Island can be complete without a visit to the Preservation Society’s Museum and Gift Shop. The building that houses the Museum, along with the Society and its collections are a testimony to the island’s rich historical heritage. The foursquare with a deep hip roof and deep-hipped porch is believed to have been built in the late 1800s by David Williams who served in the Coast Guard. It was moved to its present location near the current Coast Guard station and restored by Ocracoke Preservation Society in 1989.The Museum Gift Shop is a popular place to find that special keepsake of your visit to the island, with an assortment of momentoes - including locally crafted Christmas ornaments - along with music, postcards, photographs, cookbooks and other books of local and regional interest.Housed upstairs in the Museum is OPS’s unique research library - a growing number of historical, genealogical and photographic collections and other resources relevant to Ocracoke history. Here you can find just about anything you want to know about the island’s lighthouse, it’s British Cemetery, wild ponies, hurricanes and WWII Naval Base - and even how to square dance Ocracoke style. For locals and other descendants of the island’s original settlers there’s lots of resources for tracking down your ancestry. Throughout the summer, the Museum hosts weekly porch talks on local history on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 11 a.m. and Backyard Kids Talks, usually on Wednesdays. It also hosts exhibits by local artists. Research materials can be viewed by prior appointment. And you can shop online for many Gift Store items.

For Sara DeSpain, these fragile sand banks serve as more than artistic inspiration. The OBX is her physical and spiritual home and the very essence of the pieces she creates.Take for example her exquisite gold and silver pendants, formed from molds of actual sea-softened shell shards DeSpain gleans during her frequent beach combings, enhanced by either a natural pearl or rare gemstone. Even her souvenir beads are unique reflections of the Outer Banks. Mimicking fossils, formed with molds of tiny “ocean sculpted” seashells, these miniature masterpieces offer tourists and gift-givers lovely and very affordable keepsakes. Outer Banks’ premier jewelry designer, DeSpain began her career in 1974 and has since handcrafted her own creations. Besides being a creative designer and skilled goldsmith, DeSpain is a graduate gemologist. The rare and precious gems used in her work come from all over the world and represent the highest quality in gemstones available. It’s the perfect combination for finding that special anniversary gift or creating that one-of-a-kind engagement ring. In addition to showcasing her own work, DeSpain’s shop at Osprey Landing serves as a gallery for talented artists from across America, as well as other local designers she has handpicked for their skill and individuality in expression.DeSpain says her mission is “to help you find that one thing you can't live without.”

With its ceiling covered with surfboards, the shop offers custom made Secret Spot Surf Boards and used boards, body boards, skim boards, as well as skate gear. Board rentals and surf lessons are also available. A wide range of designer surfwear can be found here, including Rip Curl, Sanuk, Roxy, Rainbow, Lost, Oakley, Electric and O’Neill. This is not just a nostalgic fun store. Sure, it’s got the candy and toys that were popular in the good ol’ days. But more so, this is where you can find the classics --- the toys and sweets that have lasted for a reason. Is there any kid, to this day, that can resist a cap gun, obnoxious as they are?
An authentic Outer Banks treasure, this shell shop is one of the oldest family-owned stores in Nags Head, and it is without a doubt one of the most interesting. Opened in 1954 by Woodrow Stetson, a Coast Guardsman, and his wife Lucretia, the building burned down in 1965 and was rebuilt at the same location where it is today --- and is still operated by the same family. Visiting Shipwreck, located off the Nags Head-Manteo causeway, is like going to an art museum because the shells are like works of art. Imported from exotic locales all over the world including the Philippines, Tahiti, Australia, Indonesia and Thailand, all the shells are real.Check out the stunning (and valuable) Chamber Nautilus and the half Nautilus. Only Mother Ocean could create such a beauty. The store is worth a stop just to see the variety of spectacular shells that wash up on the world’s beaches (some of them, like Conch shells and Sand Dollars, can be found off the Outer Banks). The shells are displayed neatly on shelves, so you can pick them up and look closely before making a choice of what to buy. There is also a good selection of coral, which has become exceedingly rare and won’t be available for long. (Sea horses no longer are, the owner said.) The three large rooms are stuffed with fascinating sea-related items, including driftwood art; seashell mirrors, lamps, wind chimes and curtains; shark’s teeth and fish décor. In the back room, there’s an old bathtub filled with small shells for sale by the cupful. There is also a selection of fossils and rocks for sale, right near the massive whale jawbone hanging from the ceiling.
A full-service fabric shop with lots of quilting fabric choices.
A Mecca for jewelry and art with a working studio.
Think elegant. Imagine divine. Then hightail it to Sleeping In for your dreams to come true. This boutique located in downtown Manteo is filled with linens, accessories, gifts, clothing and more.
Opened in 1990, this store is still sometimes called an antique shop, but the owner said it is more accurately described as a quirky little shop that sells some antiques. What it is mostly known for is its signage that celebrates everything from the beach, to nature to universal life experiences.
There’s a lot more than “fishy” things at this store, which is much bigger than it looks from the road. With island music getting customers in the mood as soon as they step inside, the store evokes the layed-back tropical vibe and makes you want to crawl into a hammock and soak up the sun. The store is nearly bursting with colorful merchandise, literally filling every possible space from floor to ceiling. It features hand-crafted jewelry, art and furniture, much of it created by local artisans. How about some cool silver balls to hang from your ceiling? Or a sun wall ornament ---- offered in a range of sizes and prices? There are also island-themed T-shirts, dresses and sandals for sale. Suffice it to say that everything in this interesting store is beach-y, but with a bit more of a Caribbean or Pacific island edge. There is also a complete selection of Happy Birthday books and greeting cards. And of course there’s plenty of fun fish décor.
Something Old Something New is a unique vintage store in Kill Devil Hills, where you can get creative with your own unique style. With vintage, gently-used offerings as well as new offerings, there’s a lot to explore in this quaint store. Be careful not to miss this little shop, located on Croatan Hwy at milepost 9. The shop looks more like a small comfortable home than a place of retail.
Fudge, ice cream and fun, creative activities!

Sizes offered include juniors, women’s 4-24W and girl's 4-16. Not only are there thousands of swimsuits to choose from --- long torso, bra sizes, separates, bikinis, men’s board shorts --- there are also cover-ups, dresses, footwear, beach jewelry, hats, sunglasses, and rash guards. It’s got everything from classic women’s clothing to cutting edge trendy garb, for “teeny-bopper to grandmother,” and from tip to toe ---literally. There’s shapewear, dresses, blouses, pants, skirts and shoes and sandals. And there are all the embellishments and accessories---belts, scarves, purses, jewelry, hats --- all unique and stylish. Funny cards and plaques sold throughout the store would make an amusing gift or souvenir.
Smell it and you will definitely want to buy it. So of course, the exquisite aroma wafts outside, and by the time people come into the store, their resistance to this homemade fudge is pretty weak. The free samples the staff offer pretty much seals the deal. Made right before your eyes, this creamy fudge comes in numerous mouth watering flavors, including peanut butter, maple nut, rocky road and of course, chocolate. Started in 1980 on the Outer Banks, The Fudgery now has about 27 stores located in 15 states. The business caught on not only because of its fresh ingredients, but because customers could watch the scrumptious confection being cooked and hand-turned on marble slabs into loaves. Plus, if customers were lucky, the candy maker would sing for them while he worked. (Really!) The store also sells homemade caramel apples, so how can anyone resist? There are also dessert toppings in jars based on the same recipe in three flavors: chocolate, chocolate mint and amaretto. And if you want more when you get home, you can order the fudge, dessert toppings and candy apples from The Fudgery’s online store.
