Step inside The Purple Whale to the inviting living area with comfortable seating. The well-equipped open kitchen offers an island, providing extra counter space and an additional seating area for 2. Enjoy plenty of natural light from the wall of windows in the separate dining area.

Three comfortable, tastefully decorated bedrooms await your arrival, including a king en suite with a private bath, a queen bedroom, and a single over queen pyramid bunk bedroom that's perfect for the little ones. A queen-sized pull out couch in the living area offers an additional sleeping option.

Outside on the sun deck, embrace the warm ocean breezes with a cup of coffee amidst the warmth of an Outer Banks sunrise, or unwind on the back deck with a glass of wine and enjoy the amazing sunset over the sound after a fun-filled day at the beach, located just across the street!

When not spending time relaxing on the beach, splash around in the above-ground pool, play a game of cornhole in the back yard, or kick back with a good book in the inviting covered area. Before heading upstairs, refresh yourself in the outdoor shower.

The beautiful beaches of Nags Head can be conveniently accessed via a crosswalk at the Gull Street public beach access, only approximately 200 feet away from The Purple Whale. The Purple Whale is also located just a short walk (less than half a mile) from many restaurants and family-friendly activities! The whole family will love Jennette’s Pier, offering public beach access with a bath house, an aquarium, and of course, world-class fishing. The newly-updated Whalebone Park Playground can also be found nearby. Nearby dining options include a few of Nags Head’s most beloved eateries, including The Dunes, Sam and Omie’s, Fatboyz Ice Cream, Dune Burger, and more.

Awful Arthur's Oyster Bar

Welcome to the home of the happy oyster where for over 40 years the oyster has been our world. The Outer Banks only authentic oyster bar is the place to enjoy sensational fare from the sea washed down with your favorite brew or cocktail. We serve by the peck, pound, and dozen, raw or steamed to perfection. Kicked back casual, down to earth friendly staff, and reasonable prices make Awful Arthur’s Oyster Bar the all-time favorite of locals and travelers alike.

The idea wasn’t to set out and establish a new concept restaurant on the Outer Banks, but that’s exactly what Awful Arthur’s owner Jo Whitehead and her late husband, Jay, accomplished more than 35 years ago when they opened the area’s first authentic oyster bar.

Awful Arthur’s opened in May 1984 on the Outer Banks. “We embraced the concept of an authentic copper top bar with the idea of it being a major drawing card and it still is,” explains Whitehead. “I get oysters wherever they are local. We follow the warm waters.”

Just across from the ocean, in Kill Devil Hills, oyster season is year-round at Awful Arthur’s. Diners can take a seat at the copper-topped bar to observe the staff shucking oysters, served raw or steamed, along with shrimp, crab legs and clams all steamed to perfection.

It’s not just the raw bar that’s earned Awful Arthur’s both local and national recognition, including being named one of America’s greatest oyster bars by Coastal Living magazine. The restaurant is a seafood-lover’s paradise, offering the freshest catches available.
