Who We Are

Our name, Firetender, is meant to pay honor to the Algonquians, the indigenous tribe who made this patch of earth their home. The Algonquians began every day the same way: with a Sunrise Ceremony to greet the dawn. The centerpiece of that ceremony was a fire — the taller, the better, to extend their ritual offering to the light. And the one who created and stoked that roaring, leaping fire? The tribe’s designated Firetender.

In that same spirit, we have built our restaurant around a flame. We acknowledge the elemental and enduring power of fire, and celebrate it.

The beating heart of our kitchen is our custom-built stone oven, sourced from one of the premier makers of Italian pizza ovens in the country, Marra Forni, and adorned with the word that best describes what it’s like to cook with it — and that we hope you experience when you sit down with friends and family to eat with us: JOY.

We could go on all day extolling our stone oven’s many virtues, but will just say that we love it most of all for the bubbled surfaces and gentle char it brings, and that give our pizzas their rustic character.

With our skillets, we hope to extend that rusticity — to give you the deep and soulful pleasures of hearth-style cooking, with the kind of warmth and light smokiness that more conventional ovens can’t produce (think of the difference between a house that’s heated with electric heat vs. a house that’s warmed by a crackling fireplace.)

And because this kind of hearty, crowd-pleasing cooking calls out for beer, we have partnered with the region’s best, Weeping Radish — the state’s first microbrewery, founded in 1986. We are proud to feature their four core brews on tap, along with our own signature craft cocktails and what we think is the area’s best top shelf.

Of course, eating and drinking is only part of the experience at Firetender.

This might be the maiden voyage for our team, Big Wave Hospitality, but we have big dreams.

We hope to become a fixture in your lives — an oasis, and a source of deep comfort. A place to celebrate, and a place to escape. A place where discoveries are made and new alliances are born. A place where you come with friends and leave with more.

A place, above all, that feeds you — mind, body, and soul.

Sandy Run Park

Sandy Run Park leads its visitors through the heart of Kitty Hawk Woods Coastal Preserve, one of the largest maritime forests remaining in North Carolina. Completed in two phases, the park now encompasses 1600 acres of marshland, waterways and maritime forest. The park features a wooden boardwalk, two gazebos, a fishing and many more amenities for the enjoyment of the area's natural beauty and wildlife. On a stroll through the park you will likely run into many of the area's indigenous creatures and plants.Just after entering the park, and next to the ample parking area you’ll find a covered picnic pavilion, a putting green, cookout grills and a basketball half court. Below the pavilion is a canoe and kayak access deck. Beyond this recreation and picnic area is a half-mile loop, mostly boardwalk, that will take you on a scenic and educational tour of a large section of the Preserve, where wildlife and plants are identified by plaques placed along the route. At the first gazebo stop is another kayak and canoe access where you’re sure to see many yellow-bellied slider turtles swimming all around and an Osprey family nesting above. Other creatures you may get a glimpse of include deer, otter, egrets, raccoons and even a nutria. Also along the boardwalk you’ll find an observation deck and a pier for fishing (license required). The fishing pond is stocked with several varieties of fish, including brim and bass..Sandy Run Park is open from sunrise to sunset. Although the cost is free, the natural serenity and beauty it offers is priceless.
