Virginia Dare Night

Once a year, The Lost Colony holds a special performance that commemorates the birthday of the first English Child born in the New World, Virginia Dare, and over the years this unique event has come to be known locally as Virginia Dare Night.

On Virginia Dare Night, a local baby will have a starring role as Virginia herself in this outdoor drama that unravels the mystery of the initial Roanoke Island settlement that disappeared more than 430 years ago. Being a “Dare Baby” is a coveted honor in the area community, and generations of local citizens have had the opportunity to play this role. The prop baby that’s usually used in the performance is replaced with this special guest performer, as an homage to the original Virginia who was born 431 years ago. Tickets can be purchased online in advance, and interested attendees will want to reserve a seat as far in advance as possible, as this special night tends to sell out quickly. A unique way to celebrate history while combining education, entertainment, and fun, the Virginia Dare night is a longstanding and proud Outer Banks tradition that will delight young and old theater-goers alike, and which will be an unforgettable addition to an OBX vacation.
