Hatteras Island Cancer Foundation Cookbook Reception

The latest and greatest Hatteras Island Cancer Foundation cookbook, "HICF: Cooking for a Cause," will make its official debut at a special reception in the heart of Hatteras Village. Combining a selection of good eats and beverages, this event is sure to be a delightful treat for foodies of all varieties. During the evening reception, a variety of recipes from the book will be prepared by Hatteras Island Cancer Foundation Board members for a special tasting, and will also be paired with a variety of wines chosen by local expert Belinda Willis of Lee Robinson. The event is completely free for visitors who want to sample a taste of Hatteras Island local cuisine, although donations are welcome, and visitors are encouraged to pick up a copy of the cookbook which boasts more than 300 recipes that were submitted by HICF board members, the Hatteras community, and by foundation friends and regular island visitors. Serving as a delicious celebration of island life, (and a great way to help a worthy cause), this event is sure to be a crowd pleaser for any local or visitor with exceptional taste.

Thursday Bonus Porch Talk with Ann Ehringhaus: Ten Thousand Breakfasts

Take a break from exploring the heart of Ocracoke Village by partaking in one of the town’s favorite longstanding traditions of simply sitting on a shady front porch and shooting the breeze. During this special Thursday afternoon event, visitors can enjoy a respite from the heat while learning more about the unique island culture via a “porch talk” at the quaint and charming Ocracoke Preservation Museum. This porch talk is hosted by Ann Ehringhaus – a talented local author, photographer, minister, therapist, and guesthouse keeper, who will share her more than 30 years of engaging stories and experiences that have stemmed from her longstanding role as a guesthouse keeper. Everyone is welcome to find a spot along the porch and listen as the tales unfold, and are invited to linger after the session to tour the extensive Ocracoke Preservation Museum, where a wealth of centuries-old treasures are found. Daniels Family Reunion in Wanchese

Whether you’re a family member of the famed local Daniels crew, or just a visitor who wants to learn more about the origins of the Outer Banks, the Daniels Family Reunion is a fantastic opportunity to enjoy a hearty dose of Southern Hospitality is a friendly and altogether charming local environment. Open to the public, this annual family reunion is celebrating its 82^nd year, and was originally started in 1934 by Josephus Daniels, the then ambassador to Mexico and the publisher of the Raleigh-based News & Observer, and by Melvin R. Daniels Sr., Dare County's long time register of deeds and local civic leader. The guest speaker for this year’s reunion is state Attorney General Roy Cooper, the Democratic candidate for governor in the November election, and live music provided by the Captain's Crew will also be on the afternoon’s agenda. The Daniels have called Roanoke Island home since 1736, and this massive “reunion” is a great way for locals and visitors alike to discover the still standing roots of this tight-knit island community. Everyone is welcome to stop by, regardless of their ties to the island and the family, and are invited to bring along their favorite dish and dessert to add to the celebration.

Free Entrance Days In The National Parks - Wright Brothers National Memorial

The National Park Service reaches its 100^th birthday in 2016, and as part of the celebration, a number of national parks throughout the country are offering free admission, including one of the most famous parks in North Carolina – the Wright Brothers Memorial. For 16 days throughout 2016, (including this special four-day time period in August), the fee to access the park will be waived, allowing all visitors easy access to the incredible site and ensuing museums. The fee waiver includes entrance fees, commercial tour fees, and transportation entrance fees, and once on site, visitors can marvel at the monument itself, and take a tour of the museums and the Visitors Center where the story of the Wright Brothers unfolds. A unique opportunity to view of one the most historic landmarks in the state, this special celebrations allows visitors of all OBX regions and budgets to learn about the story of the First Flight.

Summer Wine Down Acoustic Concert

Take a trip off the Outer Banks to discover a hidden gem of an event that’s barely on the mainland, and which is ideal for relaxing after a long hard day at the beach. Late Night Rock N' Bowl

Fundraiser for Salvo Cemetery

Enjoy a fantastic meal and a little Hatteras Island culture by attending this special event that’s raising money for a very worthy local cause. The Salvo Cemetery that’s found within the popular Salvo Day Use Area soundside beach site is in dire need of repairs, with many of the century-old gravesites falling into the water after years of erosion and passing hurricanes or storms. A local group is aiming to save the cemetery through bulk-heading and much needed renovations, and as a result, are hosting a classic coastal dinner to raise funds. The dinner will include traditional island fare, such as chicken and pastry, Hatteras-style clam chowder, potato salad, collards, and more, and there’s a suggested donation of $10 per dinner. Once the dinner has been purchased, guests are encouraged to head to the Salvo Day Use Area to enjoy their meal, and tour the site where a number of local families’ ancestors are located, and where the history of the island can be viewed in plain sight. With an assortment of classic island cuisine, a friendly atmosphere, and a great cause as the backbone, this event is a fantastic way to learn all about Hatteras Island from the inside out. Fish with a Ranger (Hatteras Island)

Visitors of all ages will love this opportunity to learn how to cast like a pro with a special fishing tutorial alongside a Cape Hatteras National Seashore park ranger. Limited to just 15 participants, (but open to all ages), poles will be provided, so all participants need to bring along is bait and an eagerness to go fishing. During the 90 minute to 2 hour session, anglers will learn all about the sport of surf casting and surf fishing, and will have a great time soaking up the Hatteras Island sunshine, and hopefully, reeling in some great catches. The Cape Hatteras National Seashore is home to a wild world of marine life, shore birds, and other local or migrating residents, and this talk will uncover some of the cool creatures that call Ocracoke Island home. Led by a knowledgeable National Park Service ranger, visitors will learn all about the local island seashore, from the annual migration of thousands of different water birds, to the sea turtles that come to the pristine beaches to lay their eggs every summer. With a wealth of information on area seashells, local shorebirds, and even the unique (and tasty) kinds of fish in the surrounding waters, attendees will have a newfound appreciation of their barrier island environment. This special talk is free for all visitors, with no registration required, and is a short yet informative 30-minute session that’s held at the scenic Ocracoke Island Visitors Center on the edge of Ocracoke Village.

Aquarium Swim with the Sharks

Scuba divers can enjoy a rare opportunity to swim alongside giant sharks, drum, and even sea turtles during this special diving session that explores the offshore creatures of the Outer Banks up-close and personal. During this experience, divers will descend into the 285,000-gallon Graveyard of the Atlantic Exhibit, which is home of the largest shark collection in the state of North Carolina. During the easy dive, visitors will encounter impressive sharks up to 10’ ft. long, and will enjoy limitless visibility throughout. This event is open to divers who are 15-years-old and up, and Open Water Certification to 60’ feet is required to participate. The program is two-hours long, with a total of 30-40 minutes under the water. Tickets are required and can be purchased online or at the on-site ticket office.

Crabbing with a Ranger (Ocracoke Island)

Summertime is prime crabbing season on the Outer Banks, and during this fun session sponsored by the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, visitors can learn all about the tasty local blue crabs as well as the best way to catch them. Lead by an experienced park ranger, crabbers of all ages will learn how to reel in the local crabs through a variety of different and time-tested methods. All the crabbing equipment is provided – visitors just need to bring along their own bait, such as raw chicken or fish parts, which tend to work the best. Limited to just 25 participants, fishermen and soon-to-be crabbers can register in person at the Ocracoke Island Visitors Center on the end of NC Highway 12, next to the Ocracoke Ferry Docks.

All About Sea Turtles (Ocracoke Island)

During the prime summer months, sea turtle nests all along the beach start to hatch, resulting in hundreds of tiny turtles making a mad dash to the shoreline where they’ll embark on a miles-long swim to the open ocean waters. During this fascinating session that combines stories and hands-on activities, park rangers will explain this unique process while seamlessly combining education and entertainment. A quick session that’s free to all visitors, young explorers can earn their Junior Ranger badge while finding out more about one of the Outer Banks’ most unusual and unique temporary visitors. This program is held at the Ocracoke Island Visitors Center, which is located at the very end of NC Hwy 12, next to the ferry docks.

Pirates! (Ocracoke Island)

Ocracoke was once a popular hang-out for notorious pirates like Blackbeard, Anne Bonney, and Calico Jack, and during this free presentation that’s designed for the young and the young-at-heart, visitors will learn all about their exploits and adventures on tiny Ocracoke Island during the early 1700s. From wild parties to Blackbeard’s eventual demise just miles away from the Ocracoke Visitors Center, attendees will be enraptured with the strange but true stories of some of the island’s most famous residents during the Golden Age of Piracy. This event is orchestrated by the National Park Service, and the talk and presentation is led by a knowledgeable park ranger who has all the dirt on Blackbeard and his world-famous partners in crime.

Morning Bird Walk (Hatteras Island)

Hundreds of different species of birds flock to Hatteras Island for its diverse ecosystem, rich natural landscapes, and central locale along the Atlantic Flyway, and during this free National Park Service Program, birdwatchers can learn all about these local residents while enjoying a coastal stroll. The walk starts at the edge of Buxton beach, and leads through a local salt marsh and shoreline habitat, where visitors will have a chance to spot a number of summertime residents, including herons, egrets, ibises, terns, and more. Binoculars will be on hand, and both beginning and experienced birdwatchers are welcome to join in the fun expedition. Sunscreen and bug spray is recommended, and there is no pre-registration required – just stop by the entrance to ORV Ramp 44, and be prepared to see and admire a myriad of famed feathered locals.

Night Sky Over Hatteras (Hatteras Island)

During this free and open program, a National Park Service ranger will point out the local constellations that served as a guide for generations of watermen, and will explain the significance of Hatteras Island’s “Dark Sky” designation, and why it makes this corner of the Outer Banks completely unique. Visitors can bring along beach chairs, blankets or towels, telescopes, and bug spray, and enjoy a guided night on the shoreline that will shed new light on the locally enchanting night sky. No registration is required – just head to the heart of Buxton for a unique perspective of the local landscape that will surely become a treasured vacation memory.

Cast Netting (Ocracoke Island)

Cast netting is known as one of the oldest forms of fishing, and is a tricky process that requires a little know-how and coordination. During this engaging National Park Service program, visitors will learn the art of tossing the perfect circular cast net in order to scoop up a bucket of bait fish and other hopefully larger catches in the local Pamlico Sound waters. Guided by an experienced local park ranger, fishermen of all ages are welcome to join in the adventure, and enjoy a fun-filled morning on the water while picking up a brand new skill. The program is limited to 25 participants, and visitors can pre-register in person beginning the Saturday before the event at the Ocracoke Island Visitors Center next to the Ocracoke ferry docks in the heart of the village.

Ocracoke Island: Night Skies

The Southern Outer Banks are well-known as one of the best destinations along the East Coast to enjoy a stunning night sky view. Located miles away from the mainland, and devoid of any bright neon lights, the ensuing landscape is ideal for admiring full canopies of stars. During this special program that’s guided by a National Park Service ranger, visitors can enjoy a night along the beach looking up at the night sky, while the ranger points out unique constellations, planets, and other celestial treasures that are hidden in plain sight. A must for star-gazers, this free program will provide an eye-opening new perspective of the Ocracoke Island nightlife. Visitors are free to bring along telescopes or other viewing equipment, and bug spray, water and comfy shoes are recommended. No registration is required, and visitors can simply show up at the designated time at the Ocracoke Campground Beach, which is located just a couple miles south of Ocracoke Village.

Faire Days Festival Series 2016

There’s lots of activities to delight visitors of all ages at Duck’s “Faire Days” – a weekly celebration of Outer Banks fun that’s held at the picturesque Scarborough Faire Shopping Village. Cast Netting (Hatteras Island)

Fishermen of all ages can enjoy a chance to pick up a new skill via this program that highlights cast netting. Casting or “tossing” a net from the shoreline is one of the oldest fishing methods still practiced all over the globe, and during this summertime program, visitors of all ages can learn how to master this sometimes challenging practice under the guidance of a seasoned park ranger who will show newcomers the ropes, while explaining the unique history of this time-tested type of fishing. Visitors can bring along their own net, or use one of the readily-available ones on-site, and no bait or other supplies are required to join in the fun. Pre-registration is a must, and the program is limited to a maximum of 25 participants. Pre-registration can be made several days beforehand at the Hatteras Island Museum on the grounds of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse.

Family Magic Show

The inviting Duck Town Park Amphitheater serves as the perfect venue for a morning of kid-friendly entertainment that’s free for all visitors (although tickets are required.) Grab a seat on the line of wooden benches, and be amazed as OBXtreme Magic with world-renowned illusionist Clive Allen performs a stunning array of feats that will have guests laughing, smiling, and watching with their jaws dropped. From incredible mind-bending illusions to interactive audience tricks, this performance will serve as an unforgettable part of any Outer Banks vacation. Seating at the amphitheater is limited, and tickets can be acquired at the Kellogg’s Supply / The Cottage Shop on 1201 Duck Road (directly across from the Town Park) starting on Monday at 7:30 a.m. A maximum of six tickets can be acquired by a single individual for the show. Red Wolf Howling-Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge

There are a lot of wild residents that are found within the vast Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge, and one of the most unique species is the local endangered red wolves. At this session, an experienced guide will explain the local wolf population through a brief presentation, and then will take visitors out to the heart of the refuge to listen to the not-so-distance sounds of the red wolves at play. A flashlight, head lamp, and bug spray will come in handy for this nighttime trek, and kids 12 and under are free to attend. (Adults are $10 per person.) Enjoy this unique opportunity to listen to the sounds of one of the Outer Banks’ most remarkable and endangered species, while exploring a cool and barely-inland portion of the coastal landscape.

Outdoor Classroom Summer Programs

Add a little education to a beach vacation in Ocracoke with a free summertime program that’s held at the undeniably scenic Outdoor Classroom at the NCCAT eastern campus on Ocracoke Island. Open-Air Tram Tour of Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge

Sit back, relax, and let a local refuge pro take the wheel as you admire the abundant wildlife that’s found within the extensive Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge. During this adventure, you’ll ride in style via an open air tram that cruises through some of the most scenic and seldom-discovered regions of the refuge. Along the way, you’ll learn more about the refuge history, the native wildlife and plants, and the abundance of wild activity that occurs in the refuge on a daily basis. Be sure and bring a camera and binoculars – the sightseeing is second to none during this wild excursion. Cost is $10 per adult and free for kids 12 and under. Visitors may want to reserve their space in advance through the National Wildlife Refuge to guarantee a spot on the tram.

Concert On The Duck Town Green

History of U.S. Life-Saving Service Talk

Learn about the heroic efforts the US Lifesaving Service and the modern day Coast Guard during this fascinating series of weekly talks in July that are led by Commander Carl Smith (retired) of the U.S. Coast Guard. During these fascinating and informative talks, visitors will hear all about the incredible rescue of crew members from the 1918 British tanker, the Mirlo, and how everyday heroes continue to perform historic rescues using modern day equipment. With more than 30 years of active duty experience, Commander Smith is an expert in his field and was involved in more than 1,300 search and rescues during his military career. Engaging throughout, this session will shed new light on the brave men who saved lives all along the Outer Banks.

Meet a Mustang in Corolla Fridays

Crafting Canvas-Backed Decoys

Creating decoys is a generations-old tradition in coastal North Carolina, and was an instrumental practice for both locals who wanted to provide for their own families, as well as the first wave of entrepreneurs who took out the original island visitors on hunting and fishing expeditions. During this special demonstration, visitors can see the craft of constructing a canvas-backed decoy first-hand by regional artist Sam Green, who will show how a little paint and ingenuity can transform raw materials into a stunning (and functional) work of art. Visitors can view his previous creations, and can chat with the artist and knowledgeable watermen on the intricate process, as well as why these decoys are so essential for the community. This event is free and open to all visitors of the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum.

Soundside Seining (Hatteras Island)

Spend a morning exploring a wide section of the Pamlico Sound while encountering a veritable world of sea creatures that live just beneath the surface during this entertaining and educational program that highlights the unique aquatic life of the island landscape. Led by an experienced National Park Service ranger, explorers of all ages will wade through the sound and use a seining net to scoop up a variety of critters, from hermit crabs that scoot along the sandy floor, to small schools of fish that cruise through the shallow waters. This session is open to nature fans of all ages, although sturdy water shoes are required to attend, (no flip-flops or Crocs please), and participants should be prepared to get wet. Bug spray and sunscreen are also recommended. This is an open and free program to the public, and no pre-registration is required – just head to the Sandy Bay parking area just north of Hatteras Village to join in the fun.

US Coast Guard Station Hatteras Inlet Tour

Enjoy a rare opportunity to tour an active Coast Guard station during this special event that combines maritime history, modern technology, and fascinating new insight on how the local Coast Guard personnel readily save lives on a daily basis. Free to the public but limited to just 20 participants, visitors will be able to tour the interior of the Hatteras Inlet USCG Station while learning about the Coast Guard’s predecessors, the Lifesaving Service, and hearing heroic tales about some of the organization’s most famed rescues. Interested participants must pre-register in person at the Hatteras Island Museum, which is located on the grounds of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, and visitors and history buffs of all ages are welcome.

Outer Banks Bird Walk (Ocracoke Island)

Isolated Ocracoke Island is home to hundreds of different types of water birds, shorebirds, and migrating birds, thanks to an array of unique ecosystems and miles of pristine natural landscapes where wildlife can flourish. During this free program for visitors, birdwatchers of all experience levels can join a National Park Service Ranger to explore some of Ocracoke’s best vantage points for admiring the local wildlife. Binoculars, a camera, and bug spray are all recommended, and the ranger will be happy to answer questions and will readily point out local species of interest. Fun for all ages, this open program serves as an engaging opportunity to learn more about the assortment of unique birds and other aquatic creatures that call Ocracoke Island a temporary or full-time home.
