It’s everywhere on Hatteras Island and the Outer Banks, but it’s often something that we overlook and / or know very little about: It’s sand, and it’s the star of the show at this special lecture that’s hosted by the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum.

Lead by Terry Kirby Hathaway, this special presentation that is part of the Salty Dawg Lecture Series will focus on this natural element that serves as the literal foundation for everything on the Outer Banks. Sand tells us so much about the local environment, from the shoreline that’s under our feet, to the rocks and the mountains that are hundreds or even thousands of miles away. Also serving as telltale signs for geological events that took place millions of years ago, this presentation will showcase the many ways to examine sand, and will be an enlightening talk that will leave everyone fascinated about this otherwise humble substance. The event takes place at the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum, which is located on the southern end of Hatteras Island in Hatteras village, and is free to the public – as is admission to the museum itself. Naturalists, outdoors fans, and anyone with an inherent curiosity will adore this presentation where sand has a starring role.
