Hatteras Island visitors can start their vacation with a dose of education and essential information on swimming along the sunny local beaches with this brief but informative session on rip current hazards and other beach safety considerations.

Rip currents can be a prevalent concern on Hatteras Island, and as a proactive measure to get visitors informed, the Hatteras Island Rescue Squad has initiated weekly training sessions to get visitors up to speed on what to look for. The class covers a myriad of safety issues, including how to identify rip currents, what to do if you’re in a rip current, and how to safely swim out of them, as well as a lot of other issues that can spoil an otherwise perfect day on the Cape Hatteras National Seashore. Free and open to the public, this 30 minute training session that’s guided by a local Hatteras Island Rescue Squad volunteer will get visitors off to a great start, and will ensure that everyone has peace of mind for enjoying those long and sunny days on the beach. There is no fee to attend, and everyone is welcome to swing by – locals and visitors alike – to enhance their rip current and beach safety education.
