Enjoy a day of crafting while supporting a wonderful cause that’s close to many northern Outer Banks visitors’ hearts at this special weekly summertime event that’s ideal for imaginative kids. The “Paint a Mustang” activity allows kids to pay a colorful tribute to these wild local residents, while enjoying a day of creating a unique memento that is truly one-of-a-kind.

The event is hosted and sponsored by the Corolla Wild Horse Fun, and all proceeds go to benefit the preservation and protection of the famed wild horses that are found in the northern Outer Banks. The wild horses are thought to be the descendants of shipwrecked Spanish mustangs from the 1500s and 1600s, and the horses have essentially roamed free along the beaches in the centuries that followed. Their story – as well as what visitors can do to protect them – comes to life thanks to this unique activity, which is both a fundraising event as well as an opportunity for creative kids to enjoy a crafting session that’s designed just for them. Registration is not required, and visitors can choose the size of the horse they want to paint from ornament size to large “take home” kits. The price ranges from $5 to $35, and all painting supplies are included.
