As everyone can see just walking past this store, many of the mild-weather recreational activities that can be done outdoors are covered here. Racks in front of the store are filled with fat tire beach cruisers, kayaks and surfboards. Inside, surf gear and beach wear ---bathing suits, shorts, shirts and dresses, pants and hoodies ---fill racks and shelves.
Village Outfitters not only sells items, it has a huge amount of inventory available to rent, including bikes for men, women and kids and surfboards, paddleboards and kayaks. But it has so much more: beach necessities, like chairs, umbrellas and carts; baby joggers, bike seats, bike trailers and kid helmets; skimboards, body boards and wetsuits; canoes, life vests and paddles. And you can either have it delivered, or for a 10 percent discount, go pick it up yourself.
The business also offers a 2-hour nature watching kayak tour, where paddlers can see native Outer Banks wildlife such as otter, nutria, egret, osprey, blue heron and duck. The tour guide leads kayakers ---double or single kayaks are available --- in a relaxing glide through the Kitty Hawk maritime forest, into the Salt Marsh to Kitty Hawk Bay in the Albemarle Sound. Village Outfitters provides all the equipment, and all you need to do is show up at the site in Kitty Hawk. For those more interested in ocean fun, surf lessons, covering basic ocean safety and surfing skills, are offered in 2-hour group sessions, or a 1-hour private session. The lessons include use of a soft surfboard and are given, weather permitting, at low tide, when long rides are most possible.
