Budding sailors of all ages can learn the basics of how to navigate the endless waters that surround Ocracoke Island during this special educational talk that will delight visitors of all ages. The BUOY Bingo - Nautical Charts and Navigation program is a summertime event that combines facts, figures, games, and a little crafting to garner an education on what it takes to explore the local waters off of Ocracoke Inlet.

This event is held on the docks of the Skipjack Wilma Lee, which is a historic vessel that was crafted around 1940, and which certainly stands out among the boats that flock to the community town docks of Ocracoke village. During this weekly morning event, visitors to the Wilma Lee will learn all the fundamentals of reading nautical charters, using longitude and latitude hydrographic maps to determine location in degrees. During the educational adventure, maritime students will create their own compasses to use on the high seas, and will even participate in a game that will let them identity different historical and maritime features around Ocracoke Island. Fun for both kids and adults alike, this cool session gives visitors a unique insider’s perspective on what it takes to be a sailor on Ocracoke Island.
