In the heart of Hatteras Village lies the Blue Pelican Gallery. It’s a blue-colored, vintage island home that pops against the monochromatic landscape. Towering trees tie the structure to the land. Inside, artists pay homage to all things ocean.
Located in the1950’s home, the gallery specializes in American-made crafts, art and creative gifts. The emphasis is on local artists including artist/photographer/owner Jennifer Johnson.
She comes by her creative inspiration through the island environment. Her parents came to Hatteras in the late sixties. She grew up on the island and immersed herself in island-style activities. Johnson relishes spending family time on a sandbar near Hatteras Inlet, and she’s an avid fisherwoman. The Island gives Johnson inspiration to create. She gives visitors a chance to take a piece of island creativity home.
Like the island’s ever-changing ocean breezes, there is always something new at Blue Pelican. Johnson changes the inventory weekly, if not daily. The gallery line-up includes candles, jewelry, hand-blown glass, stained glass, functional pottery, handbags, candles, soap, ceramic tiles, wind chimes, sun catchers, coasters, cutting boards, sculpture, mugs, limited edition prints and more.
