Take advantage of a special opportunity to learn about the hundreds of different species that flock to the Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge – and how they’ve adapted to this wild coastal environment – with this special presentation that’s held in the heart of the southern Outer Banks.

The “Birds and Their Adaptations” presentation is held weekly at the Pea Island Visitor Center, (which is located just a few miles south of the town of Rodanthe), and is an engaging session that will answer all sorts of questions on how birds thrive – and survive – in the salty, coastal environment. Visitors will learn about how ducks stay afloat, why shorebirds have long legs, and why certain birds open their wings to dry out – among other interesting bird facts. Young visitors will also have the opportunity to create their own crafting project – a homemade bird – to take home as a treasured souvenir. Designed with kids in mind, (but fascinating for parents too), this special weekly session at the Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge effortlessly combines learning and fun with one of the island’s coolest attractions. The program is free for all attendees, and no advance reservations are required to attend.
