Young scientists who want to go behind the scenes and discover what it’s like to work at the local aquarium can sign up for this in-depth camp that shows marine biologists-to-be the science behind caring for coastal animals.

The Junior Aquarist Camp is a five-day event for kids ages 10-11 that is hosted by the North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island, and which features a myriad of activities that takes place within the aquarium itself, at locales that most visitors never get to see. During this daytime summer camp, participants will be able to help feed the fish in the giant shark tank, create veggie medleys for sea turtles, design and create treats for the friendly river otters, and learn all about the residents that live within the aquarium walls. In addition, campers will go on an adventure outdoors to collect juvenile fish, invertebrates, or comb jellies, and then transfer them to the aquarium as new residents. With lots of behind-the-scenes access and plenty of education, this hands-on camp is a great way for kids ages 10-11 to discover what it’s like to work with local marine life and other coastal critters. Closed-toe shoes and a bag lunch are required, and visitors can sign up for the camp online.
