The Cape Hatteras National Seashore is famed for the hundreds of sea turtles that lay their eggs on the area beaches every year, and visiting kids can learn all about these cool creatures with this special presentation that’s designed just for them.

This Ocracoke Island event features a short but engaging 30-minute presentation that’s designed to appeal to a younger crowd, and which will uncover all the unique facts about these seasonal summertime visitors. Turtle nests are abundant on Hatteras and Ocracoke Islands in the summer months, and kids and adults will have a great time learning about how these huge turtles haul themselves on the beach, lay their eggs, and then depart back into the deep waters. (Weeks later, the hatchlings will make a long and treacherous jaunt into the sea on a dangerous expedition that’s almost too incredible to believe.) This story unfolds at the Ocracoke Visitor Center Amphitheater, which is located on the very tip of Ocracoke Island next to the Swan Quarter / Cedar Island ferry docks. The presentation is free for all attendees, and is a great way to enjoy a break from an Ocracoke village stroll, take in a delightful setting on the edge of the Pamlico Sound, and learn something new.
