2018 marks a very special year in local Outer Banks history, as it is the 100th Anniversary Of The Mirlo Rescue – one of the most famous rescue operations in the long legacy of the Life-Saving Service, which was the predecessor to the U.S. Coast Guard. Visitors can mark this important milestone by attending a special event at the Chicamacomico Life-Saving Station – which is where the rescue was launched - and by participating in a wealth of educational programs, talks, activities, and plenty of fun things to do for visitors of all ages.

The centennial event that will be held on the grounds of the Chicamacomico Historic Site will have plenty of corresponding activities, exhibits, and other special programs, and will bring the story of this famed rescue to life. Occurring in 1918, the Mirlo was torpedoed by a German U-Boat, however, the heroes of the Chicamacomico Station were able to save crew members onboard, earning them the highest honors in the Life-Saving Service’s history. The details of this incredible rescue will come to vivid life through storytelling and other events, and visitors of all ages will be fascinated as the tale unravels.
