Owners Jim and April Vaughn operate a surfer’s surf shop, with a great selection of wetsuits, sportswear, swimwear and accessories for men, women and youth from all major surf brands. Upstairs, there’s an exceptional range of surfboards to choose from. Whalebone Surf Shop specializes in bringing in the best board shapers from around the world. The shop also offers surfboard rentals and surfing lessons in the summer months.
Back in 1975, the Whalebone Surf Shop was located at, well, Whalebone. As in Whalebone Junction in Nags Head, right where the turn is for N.C. 12 to Hatteras Island. After a couple of moves, the store finally settled in 1991 at its current spacious and colorfully-painted building in Nags Head right off the Bypass near the border of Kill Devil Hills. It was later joined by locations in Virginia Beach and Raleigh.
