Have you ever heard a wolf howl? That’s the point of the Red Wolf Howling Safaris hosted by the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge. Staff and volunteers teach you about the red wolves and then bring you into the heart of the refuge for a howling adventure.
The red wolves were placed in captivity in order to help them thrive and move away from being endangered. The refuge is a beautiful place to attempt to hear them respond during the two-hour program.
Come rain or shine, the safaris go on except during lightning, heavy wind and rain or impassable road conditions.
You meet at the Creef Cut Wildlife Trail parking lot. Registration is required. Directions are on their website.
The howling costs $7 per person with children 12 and under free. The safaris run June through August on Wednesday nights at 7:30 p.m. They offer free howlings a handful of times a year. See their website for dates.
Pets are not allowed. Bring a flashlight and insect repellent and make sure you dress for the weather. But most of all, have a howling good time communing with nature!
