Triathletes train for months to achieve their dream. Come to the Outer Banks Triathlon and experience the enthusiam, inspiration and skill! 

Why do they do it? Some to win, some for their best personal time and for some it's a personal goal on their bucket list. Individual athletes and relay teams exhibit various ranges of skill and expertise. The enthusiasm of the athletes is inspirational for everyone at the site whether a volunteer, a spectator or staff. Encouraging and cheering the athletes' onward is a crucial part of the day. It is 2 days of inspiration, excitement, relationships and achievements.

The swim portion will start at the Old Swimming Hole location next to the Dare County Airport on Roanoke Island. Swimmers will enjoy panoramic views of the Croatan Sound and the Virginia Dare Memorial Bridge and Manns Harbor Bridge. We've had requests for the address: 410 AIRPORT ROAD, MANTEO.

The bike will be an out and back course on a smooth flat road outside of Manteo and into Mashoes. (yes Mashoes...). The bike portion features a rolling hill over the Manns Harbor Bridge; a 2.65 mile long bridge over the Croatan sound. There is very little traffic and abundant views of the soundside marsh and wetlands.

The run will be flat out and back through the Airport and around the Manteo area. The Course offers a beautiful tour of the Mother Vineyard neighborhood and the north end of Roanoke Island. This is a predominantly shaded course.

The idea wasn’t to set out and establish a new concept restaurant on the Outer Banks, but that’s exactly what Awful Arthur’s owner Jo Whitehead and her late husband, Jay, accomplished more than 35 years ago when they opened the area’s first authentic oyster bar.

 

Awful Arthur’s opened in May 1984 on the Outer Banks. “We embraced the concept of an authentic copper top bar with the idea of it being a major drawing card and it still is,” explains Whitehead. “I get oysters wherever they are local. We follow the warm waters.” 

 

Just across from the ocean, in Kill Devil Hills, oyster season is year-round at Awful Arthur’s. Diners can take a seat at the copper-topped bar to observe the staff shucking oysters, served raw or steamed, along with shrimp, crab legs and clams all steamed to perfection.
