Visitors and locals who are fascinated with the area’s seasonal sea turtles and who want an opportunity to help these part-time residences on their journey back to the Atlantic Ocean can learn all about the process for volunteers at the NEST Training: Nest Sitting 201 training course. Held at the Outer Banks Center for Wildlife Education in the northern Outer Banks town of Corolla, this session will give NEST volunteers the skills they need to play an active and unforgettable role in the 2017 sea turtle hatching season.

Every year, dozens if not hundreds of sea turtles arrive on the Outer Banks to lay their eggs, and weeks later, the turtle eggs hatch from under the sand before making a beeline to the ocean. NEST volunteers help with this process, by guarding the nest and helping the sea turtles avoid distracting light in order to find their way to the sea. During this session, new and recurring volunteers will brush up on the procedures required to become a nest sitter while learning a bit about the sea turtles themselves. A fascinating experience for all involved, this unique session is the first step to watching a sea turtle hatch up close, and to helping these new arrivals reach their ocean destination.
