Please take note of changes for 2020: Tradition, sparkle, laughter, and goodwill all wrapped up with holiday spirit – that is the gift of the Christmas holiday season. This year that gift may not come in the form of a parade lined with whimsical floats or a big tree lighting ceremony but it will be a festive time full of activities highlighting and sharing traditions, both old and new.
The Town Christmas tree will continue to shine bright as part of the town’s own community tradition and other Christmas decorations will be enhanced throughout town adding some extra sparkle this year. Likewise, we want to invite the Manteo community to have fun and participate in a few festive contests this year sharing your own family traditions and other ways you showcase holiday cheer. Contest participants will be entered into random drawings for a chance to win a $100 gift card. There will be three winners per each of the contests listed below:
- “Deck the Homes” - Send a photo of your holiday decoration tradition (ex. lighting of a Christmas tree, a menorah, an advent wreath or anything festive outdoors) to info@manteonc.gov by the end of the business day on December 11th to be entered into the drawing. Winners will be announced on December 14th!
- “Making Storefronts Bright” - Decorate your business in the spirit of the Christmas season by December 4th and be entered into the drawing. Winners will be announced on December 7th. Residents and visitors alike will enjoy the Christmas cheer as they shop local for the holidays.
- “Manteo Merriment” - Submit your video of a fun holiday performance (ex. choirs, bells ringing, children singing, a family caroling around a piano or dance recital) to info@manteonc.gov by the end of the business day on December 11th to be entered into the drawing. Winners will be announced on December 14th. (Helpful hints: Don't forget to turn your phones sideways and use a tripod if you have one.)
In the true spirit of giving, the Manteo Police Department and town staff will be coordinating a food drive during the Christmas holiday to support the three local food pantries in the Manteo community. Dates and times will be shared soon, and the Magnolia Market Pavilion will serve as the drop-off site. The pavilion is a convenient location when you are already downtown shopping for the holidays.
Did we mention that Santa is coming to Town riding his very own special sleigh? Santa will visit Manteo neighborhoods greeting children with a wave and a great big HO HO HO! Dates and times of Santa’s route will be shared soon on the town website and social media. However, if you by chance miss Santa, no worries! You can drop a letter to Santa at the new mailbox that will be located downtown by the Christmas tree. You never know, Santa might just check the mailbox every now and then and share a letter or two.
All these activities celebrate community and all things merry and bright during the holiday season. These memories make for gifts that last forever. Whether you participate in a contest, the food drive or simply say hello to your favorite holly jolly Santa, we hope you find that holiday spirit that is the gift of Christmas.
