Bring an appetite and a love of fresh coastal fare to this event which corresponds with the annual Day at the Docks Festival, and which is a favorite celebration of the incredible flavors of Hatteras Island. The HICF Chowder Cook-off has been a highly anticipated contest for roughly 10 years that pits area chefs against each other for the title of “Best Chowder on the Island.” Best of all, the event also allows visitors to taste a variety of fresh samples that are sure to satisfy any craving for local flavor.

The HICF Chowder Cook-off takes place next to the Hatteras village docks, and during the event, a number of area restaurants, caterers, and local organizations bring their best steaming pots of clam chowder to the delight of the crowds. Visitors can pick up a ticket for the opportunity to be a judge, and once the ticket is in hand, can go from vendor to vendor, sampling plenty of different chowders along the way. The public votes for their favorite chowder – which is always a coveted title – and all proceeds from the event go to benefit the Hatteras Island Cancer Foundation, which is a favorite local cause. Combining charity with great taste, the HICF Chowder Cook-off is a favorite fall event that shouldn’t be missed.
