Visitors can take a step back in time and learn how the heroes of the original US Life-Saving Service performed their daring rescues and everyday duties through this special live demonstration that’s held on the grounds of the oceanside Chicamacomico Life-Saving Station.
Before the US Coast Guard and the abundance of modern technology, the local Life-Saving servicemen of the 1800s and early 1900s had to rely on careful maneuvers and brute effort to carry out rescues of hundreds of ships that became stranded on the aptly-named Graveyard of the Atlantic. During this weekly summertime reenactment, visitors can see how these heroes did their job firsthand through a special Beach Apparatus Drill performed by knowledgeable and experienced local reenactors. The show is always a hit with visitors of all ages, and is sure to provide a bit of fascinating insight into the lives of these predecessors of the US Coast Guard. Held at the Chicamacomico Life-Saving Station, one of the most popular destinations in the tri-village area of Hatteras Island, this demonstration is sure to complement any visit with an extra dose of history. Enjoy the performance, and learn a little bit about the roots of the Life-Saving service with this special and seasonal event.
