From the unique range of species that call the Outer Banks home, to the rows of beach houses perched along the shore, virtually everyone and everything abides by the changing nature of the barrier islands on the Outer Banks. Learn all about how storms, wars, and a host of factors have impacted the local environment – as well as how the islands continually change – via this short but engaging session that shines a spotlight on a unique and ever-present aspect of the Outer Banks.

The Shaping These Barrier Islands on Hatteras Island talk is hosted by the rangers of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, and is a free event that’s open to everyone with an inkling to learn more about their local island environment. Held at the Hatteras Island Visitor Center Pavilion which is just a shell’s throw away from the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, this program coincides easily with a visit to the island, and an exploration of the local landmarks and gorgeous beach scenery found in every direction. During the talk, visitors will learn all about how plants, wildlife, and even people adapt to the changes of the local landscape, and will garner a new appreciation of the delicate island landscape in the process – all with a single and engrossing educational session.
