The Barrier Island Group’s annual “4 on the 4th” race is returning to Avon this summer for another festive celebration of community spirit, island pride, and Independence Day fun on Hatteras Island. Scheduled for Friday, July 3, the popular event invites locals and visitors alike to lace up their running shoes for a scenic four-mile run or walk through the Kinnakeet Shores neighborhood, along with a special 1,776-foot dash designed just for kids.

More than just a race, the event has become a community gathering that blends patriotic fun with a meaningful local cause. Participants can enjoy race-day festivities, commemorative swag, a post-race breakfast, and a welcoming atmosphere that encourages runners, walkers, families, and spectators of all ages to join in the celebration.

Organizers with the Barrier Island Group say proceeds from the event will once again benefit several Hatteras Island nonprofits and community organizations, while also supporting local fundraising efforts for families in need. Community groups, local businesses, and volunteers all play a role in making the event a success each year.

With patriotic energy, waterfront village charm, and a strong sense of togetherness, the “4 on the 4th” race has quickly become a favorite holiday-week tradition that highlights the close-knit spirit of Hatteras Island.
