Start a Thanksgiving holiday by participating in one of the Northern Outer Banks’ favorite traditions – the Annual ADVICE 5K Turkey Trot. This event which is now in its 30th year in 2026 attracts visitors and locals alike who want to run, walk or “trot” before diving into their afternoon Thanksgiving feast.
The 5K loop begins at Scarborough Lane and makes a scenic turn through stunning wooded neighborhoods and scenic corners of the charming town of Duck before it ends at the finish line, and the fun really begins. The event caps off with a post-race party with lots of refreshments, comradery, and fun with fellow runners – who often take advantage of the Thanksgiving theme and don turkey hats or costumes to make the fun jog through the town. Everyone who signs up for the race will receive a goodie bag of Thanksgiving treats – which includes a commemorative tee to mark the occasion – and prizes are given to the top male and female finishers in adult and youth (age 10 and under) categories. Visitors can sign up for the race online before the event is held, and will want to reserve a spot as early as possible, as this popular race that is now a beloved Duck tradition tends to fill up fast.
