Come celebrate a milestone anniversary of the "Move of the Century" with this celebration that puts the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse in the spotlight. In the summer of 1999, the lighthouse made a difficult move from its dangerous position on the edge of the ocean to its new slightly inland home, and this incredible feat will be celebrated with gusto, and with a wealth of history, talks, and presentations along the way.

The 20th Anniversary Celebration of Cape Hatteras Lighthouse Move will include speeches, a question and answer session with expert panelists, artifacts from the lighthouse move, expanded interpretive ranger talks, activities for children, and free lighthouse climbing all day long. In addition to the lighthouse move celebration on July 1, park rangers will also present daily interpretive lighthouse move programs to the public beginning on May 3 and continuing through October 14. From June 17 through July 9, (which is the anniversary of the 23-day lighthouse move), expanded interpretive programming will also take place on the grounds of Cape Hatteras Light Station for visitors who want to learn more. With ample ways to explore this rich history all summer long, and a signature celebration on July 1, the "Move of the Century" is an opportunity to uncover the unique and fairly recent history of this local Hatteras Island landmark.
