'Yelp Review for ' . Bodie Island Lighthouse (18)

Bodie Island Lighthouse, built in 1872, is undergoing a construction project that will restore its corroded metal work and masonry. Nestled in the marshland overlooking Oregon Inlet near Nags Head’s southern border, the black-and-white banded brick beacon is expected to be open by early 2013 for the general public to climb for the first time ever. And the unique lens, which is in storage after undergoing extensive repair, will have been returned to the lantern room atop the 156-foot tower. The lighthouse is one of the few in the nation with its original Fresnel lens, an ingenious pineapple-shaped design with light green glass crystals that refract and reflect light.

Until the restoration is completed, the public is welcome to browse in the visitors center, which includes historic photographs and artifacts and a bookstore/gift shop. Visitors can also stroll around the peaceful grounds and walking paths at the site, which is on the northern end of Cape Hatteras National Seashore.

When the lighthouse restoration is completed, the public will be able to climb the tower for a fee, which has yet to be determined. The view from the top features a gorgeous panorama of Oregon Inlet, the Bonner Bridge, the Pamlico Sound, the Atlantic Ocean and the marshlands. On special evening openings, like those that are held at Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, climbers will be treated to spectacular sunsets and glorious full moons.
