Look at any map of the Outer Banks that includes the North Carolina mainland, and you'll notice a massive, mitten-shaped parcel of land directly to the west of the central OBX barrier islands. Almost all of this large area comprises the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge, one of the largest refuges in the state, which is well-known in environmental circles for its vast population of diverse and downright rare wildlife.
