ACE Field Research Facility

The Army Corps of Engineers Field Research Facility (FRF) in Duck, is the world's leading facility for data collection about waves, winds, tides and currents. Also known locally as the Duck Pier, it has been collecting information since 1977. Coastal science is a relatively new field of study that began after World War II. Data collected is used to improve and revise theories and understanding of oceans and coastal processes and how these processes influence beaches and barrier islands.

The FRF is the only pier of its kind and is well known in the science community. The FRF employs researchers, oceanographers, technicians and computer specialists. The 176-acre site was once used as a bombing range by the US Navy. In 1972, the land was sold to the US Army Corps of Engineers for $1.00. The site was a perfect choice for the FRF because of its stable and straight shoreline. Additionally, sand sediments found at the site are of a good size and composition for study and the offshore terrain is free from obstructions.

The pier itself is 25 feet above water that averages 21 feet deep. At 1840 feet, it's the longest research pier in the world. There is also a 120-foot observation tower where cameras monitor changes in sandbar shape and shoreline positions. There are several unique pieces of equipment used at the FRF. The Coastal Research Amphibious Buggy (CRAB) deploys instruments on the ocean bottom. The Lighter Amphibious Resupply Cargo (LARC) deploys instruments, collects data and transports supplies. Other agencies and organizations, such as the US Navy, Scripps Institute and the US Geological Survey use the FRF to position and test gadgets.

Tours are available during the summer from mid-June to mid-August. For more information: ACE Field Research Facility at Duck.
