The Red Wolf at ARNWR

In 1986, an aggressive attempt to reintroduce the Red Wolf (Canis Rufus) into the wild was undertaken at the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge. Most of the red wolf population had been wiped out through eradication, loss of habitat and interbreeding with coyotes. All pure blooded red wolves were captured by the US Fish and Wildlife Service, which undertook a captive breeding program.

Today, the red wolf roams free in eastern North Carolina, and litters of pups are born each year. Wolf howlings take place several times during the year, when refuge visitors have the chance to hear this real life success story in its natural habitat.
