Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge

The Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge (ARNWR) encompasses over 150,000 acres of pocosin swamp and forested wetlands on the mainland of Dare and Hyde counties. It was created in 1984 to protect this fragile ecosystem necessary to support both plant and animal species. Much of the refuge is inaccessible. It is one of the last eastern strongholds for the black bear. White-tailed deer, raccoons, squirrels, rabbits and possums also make their home on the refuge, as do many snakes, skinks, turtles and even the American alligator.

Over 200 species of birds can be observed during the seasons, including migrating warblers, wood duck, geese and swans. The Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge is also home to the endangered red cockaded woodpecker, which only nests in tree cavities in old growth forests.

Activities at Alligator River include hiking, canoeing, kayaking, wildlife observation, hunting and fishing. Over 15 miles of paddle trails meander through the refuge. There is also a wildlife drive that connects US 64 with US 264. It's a good way to see the refuge. A word to the wise. Refuge roads can become muddy and impassible after periods of heavy rain. During the summer the area can become very buggy.

An easy way to explore the refuge is via the Creef Cut Wildlife Trail and Fishing Area. This handicapped accessible area has ample parking, a fishing platform and is the head of an interpretive trail that takes visitors one half mile into the refuge.
