Steps from the sand and nestled behind the dunes in Southern Shores, this cozy beach home, aptly named Endangered Species, is one of the last remaining classic oceanfront cottages on the Outer Banks.

The private dune top deck overlooking the ocean is sure to be the favorite spot for watching sunrises, sunbathing, and stargazing. The private sandy path makes trips to the large, uncrowded beaches of Southern Shores a breeze. After rinsing off in the enclosed outdoor shower after a long day at the beach, grill up dinner on the charcoal park grill and enjoy an alfresco meal on the covered deck.

Updated furnishings and flooring throughout complement the vintage character and charm of this 3 bedroom home. Granite countertops and updated electronics and appliances will also add comfort and convenience to your stay. During warm summer nights, central air and ceiling fans will keep everyone cool and temperate.

The recreation room located off the garage is the perfect spot to stay entertained during nights in, with a large comfortable couch, a TV, a bumper pool table, and a kitchenette with a full-sized refrigerator. There is also a convenient full bath with a shower/tub, and a bonus room with a full-sized bed (linens not provided for this room).

High-speed internet access is provided throughout, ideal for remote working or learning.

The great location on Ocean Boulevard offers easy access to the fantastic shopping and dining establishments of Duck and Kitty Hawk. There is also a bike path that follows along Route 12, perfect for a morning walk or jogs with your furry friend.

For your convenience, this home provides bed linens and towels for weekly reservations.

Beach renourishment projects are scheduled to take place in Dare County in late spring and through summer of 2022. Specifically, projects are planned to take place along the oceanfront in Duck, Southern Shores, Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, South Nags Head, Buxton and Avon. Welcome to the home of the happy oyster where for over 35 years the oyster has been our world. The Outer Banks only authentic oyster bar is the place to enjoy sensational fare from the sea washed down with your favorite brew or cocktail. We serve by the peck, pound, and dozen, raw or steamed to perfection. Kicked back casual, down to earth friendly staff, and reasonable prices make Awful Arthur’s Oyster Bar the all-time favorite of locals and travelers alike.

The idea wasn’t to set out and establish a new concept restaurant on the Outer Banks, but that’s exactly what Awful Arthur’s owner Jo Whitehead and her late husband, Jay, accomplished more than 35 years ago when they opened the area’s first authentic oyster bar.

 

Awful Arthur’s opened in May 1984 on the Outer Banks. “We embraced the concept of an authentic copper top bar with the idea of it being a major drawing card and it still is,” explains Whitehead. “I get oysters wherever they are local. We follow the warm waters.” 

 

Just across from the ocean, in Kill Devil Hills, oyster season is year-round at Awful Arthur’s. Diners can take a seat at the copper-topped bar to observe the staff shucking oysters, served raw or steamed, along with shrimp, crab legs and clams all steamed to perfection. 

 

It’s not just the raw bar that’s earned Awful Arthur’s both local and national recognition, including being named one of America’s greatest oyster bars by Coastal Living magazine. The restaurant is a seafood-lover’s paradise, offering the freshest catches available.
