Dive into an Ocracoke Island tradition and hear some fascinating stories about Ocracoke’s neighbor to the south with this special porch talk that’s focused on the isolated but legendary Portsmouth Island. Held on the front porch of the historic David Williams house, which is the current home of the Ocracoke Museum, this talk features long-time Ocracoke Island resident and Cape Lookout National Park employee Dave Frum, who will share his favorite stories about life on Portsmouth Island.

Portsmouth Island was occupied for hundreds of years until the 1970s, when the last two residents finally departed the island, and the local Portsmouth village became a scenic ghost town. Legends still swirl around the island destination, however, and visitors will hear all about life on the island when it was just as isolated, but was a beloved home to a thriving port community. The talk lasts just an hour or so, and is free and open to anyone who wants to take a break from the summer sun, enjoy a seat, and listen as the stories unfold. A unique event that combines the local tradition of storytelling with engaging regional history, this special porch talk is sure to enlighten any visitor who wants to learn more about the southern Outer Banks.
