Visitors can delve deep into a historic home turned museum with this special tour that uncovers centuries of history in the heart of Ocracoke Village. The Ocracoke Preservation Society Museum, which is housed within a local landmark, features a wealth of materials and exhibits, and visitors can get “behind the displays” to learn the stories behind these incredible local artifacts.

The Ocracoke Preservation Society Museum is found within a more than 100-year-old home that was originally owned by Captain David Williams, the very first keeper of the U.S. Coast Guard Station on Ocracoke Island. Moved to its current locale along Silver Lake Harbor, the museum has become a popular spot for visitors strolling along the main route that borders the ferry docks and the waterfront. During this roughly hour-long tour, visitors will get in-depth stories about some of the museum’s most prominent or recently featured exhibits via a wide range of summertime hosts who have deep ties to the island and its history. From area historians to locals who have descended from generations of Ocracoke residents, this exploration truly gives an “insider’s perspective” into local history. Fun for all ages, this afternoon event that’s held on Mondays and Fridays serves as a fantastic opportunity to discover a local landmark from a local’s point of view.
