Corolla is the most northern town on the Outer Banks. While it is mostly known for its wild horses and 4x4
area, Corolla has grown to be a vibrant area of shopping, restaurants, and yes, even nightlife. To the south,
you will find the town of Duck and
Southern Shores, which
then leads you south to the heart of the Outer Banks – Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, and Nags Head - or to the north over the Wright Brothers Memorial Bridge and
through Point Harbor in
Currituck County.
Introduction to Corolla, NC
Corolla is in Currituck County. The bulk of the
Outer Banks is in Dare County, though Ocracoke Island is part of Hyde County. Corolla is considered to be part
of the "northern Outer Banks" and is north of the Town of Duck. If you could drive straight down the beach
from Virginia, you'd be in Corolla in no time; however, the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge prevents that
from happening. Therefore, you must go through Currituck County from Virginia and then back north up to
Corolla. There is only one way in and out of Corolla (Ocean Trail aka Highway 12).
The place names of
this area reflect the early Native American heritage. Currituck is a derivation of a Native American word
meaning "land of the wild goose." Chowanog, Poteskeet, Pamunkey, and other tribes that lived on the mainland
used the barrier island as fishing and hunting grounds and named it for its abundance of geese. Europeans, who
began settling in the area in the 1600s, applied the word to the barrier island, the county, the sound, and
two inlets. The name was changed to "corolla", named after the inside of a flower, after being chosen from
submissions to rename the postal service.
Development came quickly to Corolla. In 1984 there were 422
homes, but by 1995 there were 1,966 homes. By the year 2000, there were 2,750 homes in that same area. Almost
all these homes are second homes and vacation rentals, sitting empty for most of the year. KEES vacations

Carolina has a humid subtropical climate with hot and humid summers, cool winters, and year-round
precipitation. During the summer months in Corolla, a cooling afternoon sea breeze is present on most days,
but episodes of extreme heat and humidity can occur with heat index values over 100 degrees. In terms of the
ocean, water temperatures peak in the range of 77 to 82 degrees in midsummer and are at their coldest on about
the 1st of March, in the range of 48 to 59 degrees.

The most popular time to book a Corolla vacation is the summer. Summer on the Outer Banks has the warmest months of the year and contains the most sunshine. With this comes the days that are mostly filled with other visitors. The spring and fall on the Outer Banks, while cooler, does give some really great beach days. In addition, during these seasons, the roads, stores, and restaurants are the least crowded. During the winter months, the weather is cooler and there are fewer people in town. Also, many businesses close during the winter to give their teams time for some rest. However, the winter provides peace and tranquility and there are still sunshine-filled days. The Outer Banks does not get much snow, but now and then some flurries will show up. Keep an eye on the weather if you are visiting Corolla in the winter!
There are two ways to get to the Outer Banks - driving and flying. The closest international airport is in Norfolk, VA (ORF). After landing in Norfolk, you will then head south on NC-168 and US-158 where you will drive over the Wright Brothers Memorial Bridge. When you get to the road signs pointing you to NC12 North, you will turn left. Continue Hwy 12 N (also known as Ocean Trail).

Other than the fact it is a beautiful town, the Corolla area offers many local shops, restaurants, family-friendly beaches, and attractions to explore such as the Currituck Beach Lighthouse and Whalehead Club. The Whalehead Club is a mansion sitting in the historic Corolla Park. Also inside the Park is the Currituck Maritime Museum where you can learn all about fishing vessels, decoy building, and other water-focused activities. Another interesting activity within Corolla Park is the Outer Banks Center for Wildlife Education. The whole family will enjoy exploring the history of North Carolina's wildlife. Corolla Park is surrounded by the Currituck Sound to the west and the Atlantic Ocean to the east.

A fun activity to do in Corolla, if you have a 4x4 vehicle, is to drive on the 4x4 beach and try to see some of the wild Spanish mustangs. If you do not have a 4x4, there are organized wild horse tours available for your entertainment. Please do not try and pet or feed the wild mustangs though! That is not safe for the mustangs.
