The bag and straps are definitely heavy duty and built to last, I was really surprised at the quality of this bag for the price, or even twice the price. The only drawback would be that this bag is fairly heavy even when empty but I guess that goes along with durability. Once you slide it onto your back you don't even notice the weight.
It is roomy enough that you are tempted to carry your whole tackle box in it. The side pocket is handy to hold Uncle Josh jars, Gulp bags, or a small tackle box if you want. I'm very happy with this bag and would definitely recommend it.
I was a little worried when I saw comments about durability but I've taken it on 5 outings so far and it's basically in perfect condition still. I love that the compartments were breathable -- sand and water fall out the bottom (watch out when you bring it home from the beach, your floors will get sandy so put something under it).
I grew up near the raritan bay in NJ so I have some super strike darters, needlefish, etc. I tested and they fit great, but I don't use them here :)
This is my favorite surf bag now. If I could improve it, I'd make it possible to purchase the plastic inserts and sub-boxes in the bag. Also it would be nice to have a better way to store jigs & swimbaits e.g keitechs on jigheads or big hammer swimbaits, and bucktails. The way I deal with that shortcoming is to put a few bucktails in one of those velcro lure wraps (google it) and put that in the pocket of my surf top. It could fit in the front pocket of my bag too, but I use that space for more terminal tackle stored flat. I don't like it too bulgy!
If you are deciding between the small and medium, get the medium. You can take out half the dividers if you want and put things that otherwise wouldn't fit in the bag like packs of plastics, more sinkers, etc. It's not a big bag.
Pro: The design/layout of the bag. (There's Me...looking for the silver lining.)
Con: It's coming apart at the seams. I wound up supergluing the seams and the loops at the back of the bag(repair session #1) after I made the mistake of using them for their intended purpose. At that point, I didn't expect to get more than a season out of the bag.
Repair Session #2-The side has blown out in the worst place possible and I wound up losing my pliers, a John Skinner Bucktail and 2 plugs down in the rocks (More $$$ than i paid for the bag) when the bag emptied itself. I've cut pieces of a strap from a backpack and am attempting to mend the bag with them, Gorilla Glues and packing tape. I've got blue tape covering the soft vinyl where hooks were getting snagged and embedded and I expect it will take an act of God Almighty to get through another month fishing with this bag.
Don't Use the Belt Loops!
Don't Use All the Jig Slots!
Don't Use All the Tin Slots!
Don't Put More Than 8 Plugs in the Bag!
If you fill this bag to capacity, it will come apart, it simply cannot take the weight and will let you down at the worst possible time in the worst place.
