Cast Netting is a time-honored tradition on the Outer Banks, and during this engaging session that’s hosted by the National Park Service, visitors will learn all about the tricks of mastering this form of fishing on the local soundside beaches. Fun for all ages, this special program teaches anglers a new skill while shedding a little light on the culture and heritage of the Southern Outer Banks.

Cast netting is a tricky form of fishing that’s often enjoyed along the soundside or by the area’s salty canals. The practice involves taking a wide net and “casting” it expertly into the water so that it naturally unfolds and scoops up fish, crabs, and other critters that are found just below the surface. During this session, kids and adults alike are welcome to try their own hand at this fishing method, while learning a little about its unique roots and ties to Hatteras Island and the Outer Banks. The event is free and open to the public, however visitors must register for the program ahead of time at the Hatteras Island Museum which is next to the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. Wonderfully fun and educational, this program is a great way for visitors to discover a new way to enjoy the Outer Banks.
