Enjoy a special opportunity to see Hatteras Island after hours from a bird’s eye perspective with the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse Full Moon Climb. This one-night-only tour leads a small group of lighthouse visitors to the very top of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse to enjoy unparalleled views of the island that extend from Avon to Buxton and beyond, and which includes miles of Atlantic Ocean. The full moon provides the lighting, as does the Fresnel lens that rotates slowly at the top. Along the way, visitors will learn all about the history of the lighthouse from the ranger guide, and can view the dark waters of the Diamond Shoals and the “Graveyard of the Atlantic” that once proved treacherous to mariners until the lighthouse was built.

Tickets can be picked up in advance at through www.recreation.gov, and interested lighthouse explorers are urged to purchase tickets as far in advance as possible as these special seasonal tours tend to fill up quickly. Fun for visitors of all ages, (and best suited for those who don’t mind a steep nighttime climb), the Full moon Tour presents an incredible opportunity to check out the landscape of the southern Outer Banks from an entirely new perspective.
