Artistically inclined visitors will have a ball learning about a unique art form that combines ancient techniques with a resource that’s common along the Northern Outer Banks – namely, fish. The Art of Fish Printing workshop gives crafty attendees an opportunity to discover a new talent, and to create a unique masterpiece to take home and enjoy well after a vacation is over.
The event is hosted by the Outer Banks Center for Wildlife Education in Corolla, which is located in Historic Corolla Park in the heart of the northern Outer Banks. During the session, students will learn all about the ancient process of Gyotaku or "Fish Printing” – a technique that Japanese fishermen used for generations to keep records of their catches. Students will learn about the importance of Gyotaku to fisheries, and will examine how modern day sportfish are documented to promote responsible fishing practices. During the session, students will also get their hands dirty by creating their own fish prints through an array of varying mediums. Open to all attendees ages 14 and up, this 90 minute session is free and open to the public, however advanced registration is required. Reserve a spot online, or by calling 252.453.0221 ex. 1.
