The first hospital on the barrier islands, The Outer Banks Hospital is a full service facility offering in-patient and out-patient care.  Since it opened in March 2002, the hospital has met the health needs of a year-round population of about 35,000 that expands to more than 250,000 at the height of the tourism season.  The Outer Banks Hospital has 21 comfortably-furnished private rooms, with two of its beds designed for mothers to stay in all stages of birth: labor, delivery, recovery and post-partum.  There are also two operating rooms for general surgery and another for Caesarian sections.

The emergency department, which employs board-certified emergency medicine physicians and trauma-trained nurses, includes a “minor care” section in the summer to address the increased needs of the tourist population that may need treatment for such maladies as jellyfish stings, fish hook removal and severe sunburns. For those admitted to the hospital, visitation is accomodated to the desires of patient and physician.
