Outer Banks MILEPOST System

On the Banks --between Kitty Hawk and South Nags Head- many businesses give their "MilePost" address (MP). The foot of the Wright Bridge at Kitty Hawk is MP 0. The markers are posted in mile increments and continue SOUTH to MP 20 near Oregon Inlet.

No milepost markers are posted on the Southern Shores to Corolla route.

Though the by-pass (US 158 By-Pass) is formally marked, the milepost marker addressing system is often used for either road --the beach road or the by-pass-- as an indication of "where to start looking." It remains as a useful method to give a location, developed in the days when all the dunes looked alike, and is still much favored by locals --even though formal street names and addresses have been assigned.

Note, however, that if someone tells you to turn near the "fresh ponds," you're probably talking to a long-time Banker.
