History & Background

1967: Blow the House Down
On September 11, 1960, Hurricane Donna brought destruction to the Waterside Theatre. Islanders, however, would not allow their pageant to be blown away.

They again rebuilt the theatre, increasing its seating capacity to two thousand. On July 14, 1962, in celebration of the 375th anniversary of Virginia Dare's birth, the new theatre was dedicated.

The 1960s also ushered in a new look for the pageant. In 1964, noted choreographer Joe Layton was employed as director and given total artistic freedom to reshape the play. Remaining true to Paul Green's original script, Layton staged a new version of the drama, utilizing improved lighting and staging techniques.
