Lost Colony Outdoor Drama

History & Background

1947: Trial by Fire
The turbulent decade of the 1940s tested The Lost Colony, as it did the world. World War II landed on North Carolinas doorstep as the Nazi U-boat offensive destroyed Merchant Marine shipping off the Outer Banks. A blackout was imposed upon the coast, from 1941 until 1945 all performances of the drama were canceled.

Production began again after the war, but in 1947 the drama suffered its severest blow when fire destroyed the theatre and props. Only the costumes were saved, when they were tossed into Shallowbag Bay. Albert Bell, the builder of the theatre pledged to rebuild the structure in one week and succeeded. The show went on.
