The highlight of the event is a tie between the annual chowder contest, which pits the best restaurants of Hatteras Island against each other and allows lucky attendees to taste them all and declare a winner, and the Blessing of the Fleet, which closes the Day at the Docks event. During the Blessing of the Fleet, a slow parade of local fishing and charter boats chug their way along the Pamlico Sound and the waterfront around sunset, while they are blessed in both spoken word and song. Free to the public, this event is a must for everyone who has an appreciation of good seafood, great waterfront views, and the culture and local history of Hatteras Island.

Several bands from all across the country will be heading to the Outer Banks to provide hours of entertainment. The festival is a one-day event, usually held in the middle of October, but usually features a good half dozen of the genre's most admired and well-loved artists. Beginning in the mid-morning hours and continuing well after the sun sets, attendees will enjoy completely fantastic music in one of the northern Outer Banks' best locales. The gates open at 10:00 am. and are wide open to the public. For a relaxing fall afternoon of incredible music, good food, and family-friendly entertainment, the Duck Jazz Festival is a must see for any shoulder season visitor.

OinkN' Oyster Roast

Saddle Up to a hearty plate of Eastern North Carolina's favorite fare at the annual Oink N' Oyster Roast. Held at the Longboards Island Grill in Kitty Hawk, and sponsored by the First Flight Rotary Club, this annual feast is a delicious way to support a range of non-profit organizations while filling an amorous appetite for local seafood. There will be a full pig, (cooked for hours on a smoker), platters of fresh oysters, and plenty of side dishes including hush puppies, slaw, and other southern favorites, so all a patron has to do is pull up a seat, pour an accompanying brew, and enjoy. Tickets can be purchased online. Any tickets purchased online can be picked up at the event's check-in desk. Oink & Oyster Roast T-Shirts and Aprons will also be available for sale, (both online and at the event itself.) A tasty annual event that's always a crowd pleaser, the Oink & Oyster Roast is a popular and filling way for OBX locals and visitors alike to simply relax pig out for a very good cause.

Wings Over Water

The Outer Banks, and the Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge in particular, is known as one of the best bird watching destinations in the world, and the annual Wings Over Water celebrates this distinction like no other local festival. The weeklong event, which is being held each October, features a wide range of educational programs, lectures, and opportunities to meet and greet with fellow birders. During this year's festival, attendees will also have the opportunity to go on guided birding trips, attend art and photography workshops, take a tram or kayak tour of National Wildlife Refuge, visit an ancient maritime forest, and much, much more. Cape Hatteras Anglers Club Invitational Surf Fishing Tournament

On Saturday, the club also hosts an individual fishing tournament that's open to the public, with free entry for fishermen under 16 years of age. The fee to enter the grand tournament as a team is roughly $330, but the rewards are big, and spots tend to fill up fast. As one the Hatteras Island's oldest and most popular annual events, the Cape Hatteras Anglers Club Invitational Surf Fishing Tournament is a legendary fall fishing bonanza that attracts and entices anglers from all along the East Coast. Beginning on Saturday April 16th is the easy breezy First Flight 5K followed by the Flying Pirate Half Marathon on Sunday which is sure satisfy the active swashbucklers in your crew, with a course that winds through some of the most scenic locations in the central Outer Banks. Pirate costumes are enthusiastically recommended, and finishers will be greeted at the finish line with a treasure trove of prizes and booty. Beer and food await all the brave mateys that can tackle the course, and a post-race jamboree with live music, food, and plenty of grog will entertain all the runners and their friends and families. Registration in advance is required, so be sure to don your eye patch and sign up quickly for this fun, and unforgettable event.

Hang Gliding Spectacular and Air Show

The Hang Gliding Spectacular and Air Games is a true example of what hang gliding is all about, fun! Originally named the 1st Annual Tactile Meet, the Spectacular has endured over 40 years of continuous years of fun flying, good times and the creation of life long friends. The competition is scheduled each year during the third week of May. Over 60 competitors from all over will travel to Kitty Hawk Kites on the Outer Banks of coastal North Carolina to fly, party and meet old and new friends!
