Kitty Hawk Woods

The Kitty Hawk Woods Coastal Reserve is an 1,800 acre protected area made up of both maritime deciduous forest, maritime swamp forest and fresh and brackish marsh ecosystems. The site, administered by the North Carolina Coastal Research Reserve Program, has been recognized as the only maritime forest in the state dominated by the bald cypress.

The marsh environment is home to many reptiles, amphibians and wading birds, river otters and muskrats. White-tailed deer and smaller mammals can be found in the upland areas of the reserve. Songbirds abound in this protected habitat.

A great way to see Kitty Hawk Woods is via a two-mile David Paul Pruitt, Jr. Multi-use Path that runs parallel to The Woods Road in Kitty Hawk. The Twiford Street Multi-use Path, which runs into Kitty Hawk Village, can be accessed from the David Paul Pruitt, Jr. Multi-use Path. Public parking is available at Sandy Run Park on the Woods Road just off Kitty Hawk Road. Kayaks and other small boats can explore High Bridge Creek found at the heart of the reserve. A public boat ramp is available on Bob Perry Road.
