Kitty Hawk Kites

Front of 'kite central' across from Jockeys Ridge in Nags Head
It seems only fitting that kite-selling would be a mainstay on the Outer Banks where the Wright Brothers first took flight. Kitty Kawk Kites has become an Outer Banks landmark doing just that; selling kites, lots and lots of kites. All kinds of kites.

It was founded in the early 70's by John Harris, who was a pioneer in hang gliding. The stores along the Outer Banks are hard to miss due to the abundance of colorful kites and flags that adorn their exterior  — but the one across from Jockeys Ridge is definitely the one to see.

There are basic kites, kites in the shapes of animals and kites almost large enough to take you with them. The colors are mesmerizing and the shapes are endless.

The Winged Horses of the Outer Banks were part of a public art program in celebration of the Centennial of Flight.
Take the time to visit Kitty Hawk Kites and try your hand at making something fly. Family fun really is as simple as a day at the beach with a kite.

There are a few more photos of KHK in the Nags Head (photo)Tours section.
